Venice in extreme heat: a dignified survival guide for our guests

Venice in extreme heat: a dignified survival guide for our guests

Here we are. The thermometer has gone haywire, the pigeons in St. Mark's Square are walking slower than usual, and even the gondoliers have stopped singing to save their breath. If you're staying with us at B&B Venezia these days, don't panic: Venice's extreme heat can absolutely be handled, you just need to know where to go. Here's our guide — field-tested, sweat included.

**1. Museums: culture AND air conditioning, two birds with one stone**

When you could fry an egg on the Rialto Bridge, museums become a safe harbor. Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana offer contemporary art, high ceilings, and serious air conditioning. The Gallerie dell'Accademia deliver Renaissance masterpieces and finally, human temperatures. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection also has a lovely shaded garden for when you want to step outside without immediately walking back into the oven. Practical tip: go during the midday hours (1-4 PM), when even Venetian cats refuse to leave the house.

**2. Shopping (with climate-controlled superpowers)**

If retail therapy meets the need for survival, the Nave de Vero shopping mall in Marghera is convenient, spacious, and cool, with everything you need for a long break from the heat. In the historic center, indoor climate-controlled options are scarcer than you'd think — heads up that the famous T Fondaco dei Tedeschi near Rialto has been closed to the public for a while now (the previous operator didn't renew its lease and a new one hasn't been found yet), so it's better not to recommend it as a stop for guests.

**3. Shaded gardens: cool for free**

Not everyone loves indoor spaces, and that's perfectly fine: Venice has some surprisingly cool green corners. The Giardini della Biennale, in Castello, have huge trees, benches, and peace and quiet, away from the tourist crowds. The Giardini Papadopoli, near Piazzale Roma, are handy if you're arriving or leaving that day. The Giardini Reali, just behind St. Mark's Square, are small but well-placed, with a view over the basin.

**4. The sea: when you need the ultimate cure**

Sometimes the only real cure for the heat is a swim. The beaches of the Lido are a 15-20 minute vaporetto ride from San Marco, with sand, water, and fully equipped beach clubs. Also on the Lido, Alberoni beach is wilder and less crowded, ideal if you're after some quiet.

**A tip from the house**

The best hours for exploring on foot are still early morning (before 10 AM) and after 7 PM, when the city cools down and regains a bit of its quiet magic. In between: museum, mall, or shade — your choice, as long as you don't challenge the midday sun to a duel.

Enjoy your (cool) stay in Venice!
